What Are The Signs and Symptoms of Stress?
Stress will affect our emotions and we may feel irritable, tearful or angry. It can cause us to feel worried, anxious, fearful or hopeless. Stress can cause it difficult for us to make decisions, cause us to random irrational thoughts or feel overwhelmed by life in general.
The physical symptoms of stress are stomach problems -irritable bowel syndrome is a common side effect of stress, headaches and can sometimes manifest itself in muscle pains. Stress can bring about skin reactions such as excessive dandruff or rashes. Other signs of stress can be feeling dizzy (in open or confined spaces), feeling sick or faint.
Stress can also cause high blood pressure or chest pains which should cease when our stress goes. It can also cause loss of libido. It can upset our sleeping pattern.
Stress can also make us behave differently particularly our appetites or exercise, our habits around alcohol, smoking or taking other substances. Stress can cause us to withdraw from social activities or friends.
What Are The Causes Of Stress?
These causes vary from each individual. For example the level of stress we are comfortable with may be higher or lower than those around us. Stressful feelings usually occur when we feel that we don’t ave the resources or coping mechanisms to manage any challenges we face. Pressure at work, school, home , illness or difficult or sudden life events such as bereavement can trigger stress.
The possible causes of stress include our genes, upbringing and experiences as children or adults. If we have a parent who suffered stress as children we can mirror this in adult life. Personal problems in relationships. Stress can be attributed to life changes such as money worries, moving house, changing jobs or schools, being bullied or work issues, health issues either personal or someone close to us, loneliness or feelings of being unsupported.
What Is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
This is a mental condition caused by a traumatic experience the symptoms include flashbacks and nightmares. Any situation that we find traumatic , for example road accidents, death of a loved one, an assault or childbirth, the trauma can be triggered by the thought of the occurrence.
How Can We Cope With Stress?
Take time away from watching, reading or listening to news stories including those on social media. Make time to unwind try and re-engage yourself with the things in life that you enjoy music, for example, is great for stress. Talk to friends about how you feel it’s possible they might be suffering the same problem as you it’s comforting to know you are not alone in feeling this way. Where possible avoid alcohol or smoking, eat healthily and take some form of exercise. Seek medical advice.
