What is stammering?

The person who has this problem often avoids speaking or changes words.
How Can Hypnotherapy Help With Stammering?
Stammering ,also known as stuttering, affects the flow of speech and can have a profound impact on confidence, self expression and emotional well being. While traditional speech therapy plays a vital role in helping many people manage their speech, hypnotherapy is increasingly recognised as a valuable complementary approach….particularly when emotional or psychological factors are involved.
What causes Stammering?
Stammering is not just a mechanical problem with speech. For many people it is closely linked to anxiety, fear of judgement, past negative experiences or a loss of confidence around speaking. These emotional responses can create a cycle ; fear of stammering increases tension , tension disrupts speech and disrupted speech reinforces fear.
Can Suppression Cause Stammering?
Yes often it can, a few years ago a client who suffered from stammering was as a child very outgoing and chatty however his father was continually telling him to shut up and kept telling him that no one wanted to hear what he had to say.
Consequently this affected him deeply at school when asked to speak in class where his stammering got worse and he was then mocked by his fellow classmates. This resulted in him lacking confidence in relationships and the work place.
Hypnotherapy worked by helping to interrupt this cycle at a deeper level by helping him to reframe these memories, release his emotional blocks and replaced them with feelings of safety, confidence and control letting go of the triggers from the past.
My client now speaks without stammering!
How Does Hypnotherapy Work?
Hypnotherapy works by using guided relaxation and focused attention to access the sub conscious mind, the part of the mind where habits, emotional responses and automatic reactions are stored.
When a person enters a relaxed hypnotic state they can become more receptive to positive suggestions and new ways of responding. This can be particularly helpful for stammering which often occurs automatically rather than consciously.
Anxiety And Stammering
One of the key benefits of hypnotherapy is reducing speech related anxiety. Many people who experience anticipatory anxiety before speaking situations such as introductions, phone calls or public speaking. Hypnotherapy can help calm the nervous system , allowing the body and mind to relax whilst speaking.
The mind commands and the body obeys. As tension increases speech often becomes more fluent and controlled and helps the person to stop overthinking.
Hypnotherapy Can Increase Confidence
Another important aspect is building on confidence and self belief. Hypnotherapy can reinforce positive self talk and strengthen a person’s sense of capability when communicating.
By visualising successful speaking experiences and rehearsing calm fluent speech at a subconscious level clients can feel more empowered in real world situations.
How Successful Is Hypnotherapy For Stammering?
It is important to note that hypnotherapy is not a quick fix, it requires persistence and commitment from you to overcome the problem however it can significantly enhance progress with many people experiencing improved fluency, reduced anxiety and a healthier relationship with their speech overall.
